Just to
the south Just North of
Wrightsville Beach is secluded Figure 8 Island. This private residence island is only accessible by a guarded causeway bridge off Porter’s Neck Road. It is home to only 441 private homes and absolutely no commercial property. The island is the ultimate living or vacation destination for Al Gore’s family as well any many other celebrities and politicians.
The island is about 15-20 minutes from the heart of Wilmington. Commuters can expect moderate traffic depending on time of day and season. Highway 17 North is a four land road and Porter’s Neck Road leading to the island is a two lane road. Once on the island, there are about 20 smaller roads winding throughout the homes.
More on Figure Eight Island
Figure Eight Island, just
north of Wrightsville Beach, is a private, very
exclusive, oceanfront resort community. This island is,
in the most extreme sense, a highly restricted
residential island of 406 expensive homes. It's a
favorite hideaway for stars and political bigwigs who
want privacy when they're visiting the area. Former Vice
President Al Gore and family, for example, have enjoyed
vacationing here since 1997.
The development includes a yacht club, a marina, tennis courts and a boat ramp. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway bridge, and a guard will let you onto the island only if you've called ahead to someone on the island, such as a friend or a real estate agent, and are on the list at the gate.
There are no commercial enterprises here, just pure
beautiful beaches for the vacationer looking for some
R&R and peace and quiet. The celebrity orientation of
the island does not mean regular folk can't rent homes
and enjoy a private vacation. In fact, the island is
very hospitable to vacationers and welcomes guests to
its uncrowded shores.
