Wilmington has long been known
for its cultural history. With its
coastal and historical ambiance, it competes
as a major center for the performing arts.
The downtown area is the hub of arts
organizations and activities for our region.
It has become a huge draw for musicians,
filmmakers, actors, writers and artists,
where an array of cultural events and
activities can be experienced throughout the
year. The center of this rich cultural area is
Thalian Hall Center for Performing Arts, one
of the oldest theaters in the country.
It opened in 1858, and currently hosts 250
performances each year on it's main stage.
Theater companies are plentiful and employ
the talents of local writers, musicians, and
performers. Touring companies
regularly visit Wilmington..notables such as
Oscar Wilde, Frank Sinatra, Roberta Flack
and Ray Charles have graced our area.
In neighboring Brunswick County, they have
enjoyed an equally impressive group of
talent, including Doc Watson, Lee Greenwood
and The Platters. Along with Thalian Hall, there are a number
of museums including Louise Wells Cameron
Art Museum, Cape Fear Museum and the
Wilmington Children's Museum. These
institutions host nationally and
internationally renowned artists, as well as
local and regional talent. In addition to a thriving arts community, the
film industry established a strong presence
by opening a movie studio in 1985. The
studio attracts film and television
productions to the area on a regular basis.
Many professional actors including, John
Travolta, Sandra Bullock, Martin Lawrence,
Katie Holmes and Chad Michael Murray have
worked here on various productions. The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, The
Chamber Music series, and regular concert
series are a part of the diverse music scene
that we are fortunate to experience.
Many local clubs and restaurants offer live
music from every imaginable genre. From Azalea's to Jazz and even Seafood, the
Cape Fear Coast is home to many fun and
unique festivals and events. It's easy to see why our area is an
environment rich in the arts, offering a

Recreation
The Wilmington area's enticements
are many and diverse, but the greatest
treasures to be found are the simplest: the
beaches. In very few places will you find so
many beaches, all of them beautiful and
clean and mostly uncrowded.
The Cape Fear Coast is ideal for beachcombing, fishing and relaxing by the shore. Anglers can spend hours fishing from the piers and surf, or charter a half-day or full-day deep-sea offshore fishing trip. Enjoy nature kayak tours, Fort Fisher Aquarium, Civil War battlefield, USS North Carolina battleship and numerous parks.
Only moments away you can step back into
time in Historic Wilmington where you can
stroll along brick and cobblestone streets
or watch the sun set from a number of local
restaurants. Explore the 230-Block
National Register Historic District by horse
drawn carriage or trolley tour.
If you enjoy outdoor sports, there's no better time of year to tee-up at our area golf courses. Golf Digest (2002) ranked Wilmington as the 8th Best Metro Golfing area in the country. Great climates, pristine greens, uncrowded courses and affordable rates make playing in the Wilmington area a golf lover's dream.
